The Storehouse New Mexico food pantry believes in the power of community and loves it when someone supports our mission with passions of their own. David is one of those people who is making a real difference. He’s a marathon runner who is using his running as a way to raise money for the Storehouse. He’s quite literally going the extra mile to feed local families.

As an avid runner, David saw an opportunity to use his miles to raise meals—challenging himself while supporting a cause that directly impacts local families in need.

David’s Inspiring Story

“I’ve been a runner my whole life but only started running marathons in my mid-50s when my daughter inspired me to take on a challenge that was bigger than any athletic feat I had previously achieved. She was running her first marathon and asked me to join in the pain, commitment, and joy that comes with training for and completing 26.2 miles. We ran our first in Vancouver, and then I went on to tackle the world marathon majors.”

“I felt so blessed to have these opportunities that I began either dedicating each marathon to family and friends or using the platform to help raise money and awareness for community causes that my wife and I believe are important. We have tried to help organizations dedicated to addressing food insecurity, housing insecurity, and education, among other causes.”

David became aware of The Storehouse New Mexico and its mission several years ago during a group volunteer activity. He knew the food pantry would be the perfect recipient for a fundraiser. In David’s words he saw “how important Storehouse is to our community, helping those who are struggling with food insecurity.”

Support David’s Fundraising Efforts

David has launched a fundraising campaign to support The Storehouse New Mexico, ensuring that more families, seniors, and children have access to nutritious food. Every dollar donated helps provide 5 meals to local people in need. Campaigns like this are what make the Storehouse’s work providing free groceries possible.

Want to Go the Extra Mile to Feed Local Families?

For every mile David runs, he is helping raise awareness and funds for New Mexico families facing food insecurity. Just as every step in a marathon matters, every donation—big or small—helps the Storehouse feed our neighbors in need. Of course, most of us aren’t able to run a marathon. The good news is that anyone with a passion to help can make a difference at the Storehouse. For example, potters donate bowls to our annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. Seamstresses have donated proceeds from selling their crafted goods. There’s a local family who collects donations through their holiday light shows. You can set up your own fundraiser for The Storehouse New Mexico anytime by using our Virtual Food Drive/Fundraiser creator

Food insecurity is a major issue in New Mexico and the need is greater than ever. More than one in seven New Mexicans (over 315,000 people) struggles with hunger, including one in five children. In fact, New Mexico has one of the highest rates of childhood hunger in the nation. If you know of someone who needs food, direct them to our Need Food page for information.

Supporting fundraisers like David’s or even creating your own, can help make a difference. If you have ideas or want to learn ways you can use your talents to help the Storehouse, send an email to info@StorehouseNM.org.
