Many of us know of United Way of North Central New Mexico (UWNCNM) and how they support local nonprofits like the Storehouse. But very few people know all of the ways UWNCNM makes a difference. There are many! UWNCNM explains, “When every family and every child has the chance to thrive, our community has a stronger, brighter future.” Here are some of the ways they have supported the Storehouse.

United Way Grants

UWNCNM is the state’s largest grantor, giving out $3.1 million in 2021-2022 to New Mexican nonprofits. The Storehouse was awarded a $14,000 Basic Needs grant that helped cover expenses related to general operating costs, staff salaries, and COVID-19 efforts to ensure that hungry New Mexicans had a place to turn to for food. The Storehouse is grateful for this support. Grants like this are just one way that United Way of North Central New Mexico supports local nonprofits.

Community Involvement and Day of Caring

UWNCNM is also a hub for community involvement. The organization connects individuals and businesses to the community through programs like Workplace Giving, where you can support nonprofits and donate through your work. They also organize a Day of Caring, which is a five-county volunteer event that connects the community with agencies across central and northern New Mexico. United Way says, “Participants will learn about volunteerism and support, ways to donate items and connect with organizations making an impact.”

In September 2022, a group of Day of Caring volunteers helped at the Storehouse. Check out the video of them hard at work! We appreciate United Way for helping pack and hand out food and hope to host a Day of Caring or other volunteer events again this year.

The 211 hotline from United Way provides free referrals to health and human services, government agencies, and community-based organizations.

Resources

Last, but most certainly not least, UWNCNM provides resources to connect people with information and support. They offer important resources like the 211 Information and Referral helpline. 211 is a great number to call if you are in need and are not sure where to turn. United Way also operates the Family Advocacy Center and helps low-income people file their taxes through Tax Help New Mexico.

Thank you United Way!

The Storehouse would like to thank UWNCNM for supporting a most basic need in our community: food. UWNCNM has given the Storehouse grants, organized volunteers for our pantry, and also served as a local representative for critical federal opportunities like the Emergency Food and Shelter Program.

If you individually give to the United Way Community Fund, we’d like to thank you too, for being part of that effort.
